A company called Laser Power Systems has created a concept whose engine operates on the basis of thorium. Being radioactive, the team used very small pieces to build a laser that heats the water and produces steam. This steam is converted into energy by means of a turbine.
A single gram (0.03 ounces) of thorium produces more energy than 28000 liters (7400 gallons) of fuel, while an amount of 8 grams (0.3 ounces) would be sufficient to propel a car for 100 years.
