Erich Jyri Prikko is a soldier of the Estonian defense force. He was recently engaged in a military exercise with his company in the forest, near lake Võrtsjärv. After a while Erich ventured into the forest to search for an “alternative bathroom”. That was when something interesting caught his attention.

“I heard some funny voices that reminded me a cat or a small baby. I noticed some kind of a cute animal walking towards me. At first, he reminded me a dog, but pretty quickly I realized it was a small baby moose trying to tell me something.”

The baby moose was all alone in the forest. Erich decided to approach calmly to the baby moose trying to help him to go back to his mother without stressing him. That is when an amazing thing happened to him. The moose started to walk calmly to him.

“He was quite shy at first, but he finally decided that I seemed to be trustworthy and came very close to me. He even tried to find something under my armpit,” Erich stated. “He might have thought that I have mammary glands.” It looked like the baby moose mistaken the soldier with his mother.

After Erich understood the situation, he knew he couldn’t help the baby, so he called his veterinary for help.

“I called our veterinary office and let them know what happened,” Erich said. ” I wanted to do more for the small calf and wanted to ask what should I do.”

Erich was asked to returned the calf where he found it and to stay there with him until the vet unit will come to take care of it. After the vet arrived, they feed the baby with milk, in case his mother won’t come back. After that they left the baby in the same area without disturbing the are so the mother wouldn’t be spooked away. Erich found it difficult leaving the calf there all by his own, but it all paid off.

“We noticed very fresh big moose footprints that indicated that the small calf had been rescued by his mother. I wanted the calf’s mother to find him and I was very satisfied when we found out that they really found each other.”

As a soldier, Erich said that it is his duty to protect the people and the animals as well and he surely did that!
